I Called Him Morgan: The music and life of Lee Morgan

LISTEN

Lee Morgan burst into the jazz scene as a teenager playing trumpet on coltrane’s 1957 masterpiece Blue Train. After learning at the feet of Art Blakey and the jazz messengers Lee Morgan became one of the key hard bop musicians of the 1960s producing more than 30 records some of which are now considered jazz classics. Then on a snowy night in February 1972, Lee Morgan was shot dead by his common-law wife Helen during a gig at a club in New York City. Listen to the short and tragic life of Lee Morgan through his 15 year professional career including audio excerpts from the 2016 Swedish produced documentary on Lee Morgan entitled  “I Called him Morgan”.

My tribute to McCoy Tyner who left this world and went home March 6, 2020.

McCoy Tyner, a cornerstone of John Coltrane’s groundbreaking 1960s quartet and one of the most influential pianists in jazz history, died on Friday at his home in northern New Jersey. He was 81.
His nephew Colby Tyner confirmed the death. No other details were provided.


Along with Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and only a few others, Mr. Tyner was one of the main expressways of modern jazz piano. Nearly every jazz pianist since Mr. Tyner’s years with Coltrane has had to learn his lessons, whether they ultimately discarded them or not.

Bob would have turned 75 years old on February 6 and we honor this occasion by digging into the genius that was his music. Jamaican Producer All Stars of the 60s and 70s

Jamaica in the 1960’s and 1970s  saw the rise in musical fame of sound engineers who would “remix” instrumental tracks adding primitive sound effects and creating brand new songs. These innovative mixing techniques and new sounds became known as dub and laid the ground work for much of the DJ culture of today. 60th Anniversary Celebration of the release of Kind of Blue by Miles Davis

60 years ago, on August 15, 1959, saw the release of Kind of Blue arguably the greatest jazz album ever recorded. Kind of blue is the best selling jazz record of all time, no. 1 on the BBC 50 greatest jazz albums, and no 12 on the rolling stone magazine list of the 50 greatest albums fall time. Jazz Pianist Chick Corea said about the album. “It is one thing to play a tune or a program of music, but it’s another to practically create a new language of music, which is what Kind of Blue did.” Quincy Jones called it “a work of art that explains what jazz is.” Come listen to what all the fuss is about as we play live recordings from the album and sample some covers.

Come celebrate the famed Jamaican organ, piano player, and songwriter Jackie Mittoo. He was a founding member of the Skatalites and the musical director of studio one records, Jamaica's most renowned record label. This placed Jackie at the center of all the major movements in Jamaican music in the 1960's and 1970s.
