Bird 100: Charlie Parker Centennial Celebration

August 29,2020 is the 100th birthday of Charlie Parker, considered one of the most influential jazz artists of the 20th century and the father of improvisational bebop.  Four of his recordings have been inducted into the GRAMMY Hall of Fame , the U.S. Postal Service has issued a commemorative stamp in his honor, and the Parker composition "Koko" was included in the National Recorded Registry. Join WXYC and Jazz incognito as we celebrate Parker’s tunes and discuss the slew of new releases, vinyl reissues, the first-ever excursions into graphic novels, and a variety of virtual events coinciding with the Bird 100 festival

I Called Him Morgan: The music and life of Lee Morgan

Lee Morgan burst into the jazz scene as a teenager playing trumpet on coltrane’s 1957 masterpiece Blue Train. After learning at the feet of Art Blakey and the jazz messengers Lee Morgan became one of the key hard bop musicians of the 1960s producing more than 30 records some of which are now considered jazz classics. Then on a snowy night in February 1972, Lee Morgan was shot dead by his common-law wife Helen during a gig at a club in New York City. Listen to the short and tragic life of Lee Morgan through his 15 year professional career including audio excerpts from the 2016 Swedish produced documentary on Lee Morgan entitled  “I Called him Morgan”.
