Sound Dimension Celebration: Studio One's Legendary House Band

 

LISTEN 

The Sound Dimension band was the house band for Coxsone Dodd’s legendary Studio One in Kingston, Jamaica. While at Studio One the band created seminal instrumentals, backed dozens of singers, and are the backing band for hundreds of international hits. Their song “Full Up” is one of the most versioned tunes of all time and was featured on the mega hit "Pass the Dutchie.” Their song  "Real Rock" is the most used riddim in reggae history.  Join WXYC and Jazz Incognito as we celebrate the Sound Dimension with their original recordings and getting in as many versions as we can fit in three hours.

John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme detonated on the scene in 1965 and was an instant commercial and critical success. Its is now considered a timeless piece of american music and a masterpiece of jazz. This year we witnessed a landmark discovery and a new release giving us a chance to hear "A Love Supreme" recorded live at The Penthouse in Seattle on September of 1965. 

Join WXYC and the Thursday Night Feature as we celebrate the incredible release of “Live in Seattle” with John Coltrane’s music including playing this new release in its entirety.

The Disco Devil: A Memorial show for Lee Scratch Perry

Lee Scratch Perry died on 8/29/2021 in Lucea, Jamaica. He was 85. A legendary and innovative producer he mentored Bob Marley into a superstar and created the first ever dub album. From the mid 1970s he produced hit after hit from his legendary Black Ark studio in Kingston including critically acclaimed records with artists such as the Heptones, Junior Byles, Max Romeo and the Congos. One of the many great musical exports of the island of Jamaica was the invention of Dub. A musical style featuring the drum and bass tracks of studio recordings and made the producer the leader of the band. The producer would use the drum and bass tracks a foundation and then manipulate the previously recorded horn, piano, guitar, and vocal tracks fading them in and out an adding affects such as an echo. Dub has since infected nearly every musical corner of our world being integrated into other cultures and producing new music never envisioned by these Jamaican producers. Join Jazz Incognito, with special guest Nth Degree, as we travel the world sampling Dub styles from the continents of Africa, South America, North America, Asia, and Europe.

Lester Young vs. Coleman Hawkins: The greatest jam session in jazz history

In 1934 a tenor saxophone jam session turned into one of the most famous cutting contests in the history of Jazz. A 25-year old new comer named Lester “Prez” Young had an all night jam session with the then undisputed king of the tenor saxophone, Coleman Hawkins.  Both these musicians would later become Jazz icons and are now considered the fathers of the Jazz tenor saxophone. This cutting contest became so famous in Jazz lore that it was recreated in the 1996 Robert Altman film “Kansas City” where Lester Young was played by Joshua Redman, and Coleman Hawkins played by Craig Handy. Some accounts have Lester young stealing the crown that night and launching his subsequent career, but find out for yourself. Join Jazz Incognito as we relive this famous session by playing dueling 20 minutes sessions of Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, and the Kansas City Band for three hours.

The selector is the one who chooses what music to play and when to play it. They control the vibe of the dance and through their music selection the selector can make or break a sound system. In the US we call this person a DJ, but in Jamaica this position is referred to as the selector while the DJ is the mic man. Many great selectors have come and gone creating a long history of amazing music.
