The Mighty Selectors: The Heart of Jamaican Music

LISTEN

The Soul of Jamaica crew is back bringing their deep crates of rare Jamaican gold to celebrate one of the most important people in any sound system, the selector. The selector is the one who chooses what music to play and when to play it. They control the vibe of the dance and through their music selection the selector can make or break a sound system. In the US we call this person a DJ, but in Jamaica this position is referred to as the selector while the DJ is the mic man. Many great selectors have come and gone creating a long history of amazing music. Come join Jazz Incognito, Selector B Steady, and the Nth Degree as we pay tribute to some of the great selectors in Jamaican history as well as share a bit about this crucial part of sound system culture.

Bird 100: Charlie Parker Centennial Celebration

August 29,2020 is the 100th birthday of Charlie Parker, considered one of the most influential jazz artists of the 20th century and the father of improvisational bebop.  Four of his recordings have been inducted into the GRAMMY Hall of Fame , the U.S. Postal Service has issued a commemorative stamp in his honor, and the Parker composition "Koko" was included in the National Recorded Registry. Join WXYC and Jazz incognito as we celebrate Parker’s tunes and discuss the slew of new releases, vinyl reissues, the first-ever excursions into graphic novels, and a variety of virtual events coinciding with the Bird 100 festival.

Treasure Isle Records: Ska, Rocksteady, Dub Celebration

Join DJs Jazz Incognito, Selector B Steady, and the Nth Degree combine their reggae crates for the first time in celebration of Treasure Isle Records. Treasure Isle Records founded by legendary DJ Arthur “Duke” Reid in 1964 and resided on top of his liquor store. This Jamaican record label has been credited with countless ska and rocksteady hits that are now considered reggae canon. Much of these tunes played by the studio band led by Tommy McCook and the Skatalites, later to followed by the Supersonics. Join us as we spin three hours of our favorite Treasure Isle releases and songs by Treasure Isle artists.
